There’s something about the scent of cinnamon and cider that gets me in the Christmas spirit.
I love Christmas lights, the chill in the air, and all the holiday music, but nothing gets me more excited than the fragrance of the holidays.
Two of the easiest ways to make this happen are with mulling spices and a little slow cooker apple cider. If you’ve never tried these recipes out during the holidays, then I’ve got a little Christmas surprise for you!
Here are some of my favorite recipes that make my house smell merry and bright during the Christmas season:
- 1–2 fresh orange(s), sliced with peel
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 3 tablespoons whole cloves
- 2 tablespoons whole all spice
- 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
- 4 cups of water
In a large pot over the stove, toss in all ingredients including the water and sliced oranges. Heat on the stove until it reaches a boil. Reduce to a simmer. As water evaporates, continue to add more. This should last for up to 2–3 hours. Add more or fewer spices and oranges to fit your “taste.”
Slow Cooker Apple Cider
- 8 cups apple cider from store
- 3 large cinnamon sticks (or 5 small ones)
- 1 apple
- 1 orange
- 2 tablespoons whole cloves
In a 2.5 gallon slow cooker, add the cider and cinnamon sticks. Insert cloves into orange, cutting slits to insert if necessary, and then add to cider. Cook 2 hours on low. Cut apple into slices, and add to slow cooker. Cook another hour or two on low, watching to make sure the apples don’t get mushy. Enjoy!
