5 Types of Resolutions People Don’t Keep (And How You Can Keep Them)

You know what’s the hardest part of setting a New Year’s resolution?

It’s keeping the resolution!

Every year, thousands of people flood their local gyms in January. Finding an open treadmill in early January is as difficult as buying a front row seat to Taylor Swift.

But come February, those same gyms are like ghost towns. You can use any treadmill you want—even the one right next to the window!

Sound familiar?

So many of us, myself included, can’t seem to keep moving forward on our resolutions. We struggle with stuff like:

  • Eating healthier or losing weight. If only kale tasted like french fries.
  • Getting out of debt. Everyone knows living in debt is a bad thing, but why do so few people actually take steps to get out of it?
  • Learning more. More books. More college degrees.
  • Taking the next career step. The boss might be leaving for a new job, and this could be your big chance!
  • Giving more. Charities, churches, nonprofits—there are a lot of organizations worth donating to.

So what is it about New Year’s resolutions? Why do so many of us fail at following through?

Your goals aren’t specific.
Don’t set a goal to just “get in shape.” Make it as specific as possible. Pick a specific diet or weight-loss plan that you will be using.

Your goals aren’t measurable.
If your goal is to lose weight, then how much weight would you like to lose? If you’re getting out of debt, how much debt do you want to drop this month? This year?

Your goals aren’t actually yours.
In other words, your mom may have a goal to get you to move back home this year—but that’s not your goal. It’s your mom’s.

You didn’t set a time limit.
Make sure you set a realistic time goal as well. Losing 30 pounds this year is totally doable. Losing that much weight by mid-January? Not as much!

You didn’t write them down.
You might set a few goals in your head, but there’s something about writing them down. Something inside you just “clicks,” and the idea of the goal becomes more permanent.

Don’t let 2017 become just another year filled with resolutions you didn’t keep. Follow these pointers and I believe you’ll have the best year you’ve ever had!
